Facials can sometimes cause breakouts, but this is usually temporary and depends on a variety of factors. Here's why this might happen:
1. Skin Purging
What it is: During a facial, products and techniques like exfoliation and extraction can stimulate cell turnover (which is a good thing!) . This might bring underlying clogged pores or impurities to the surface, leading to temporary breakouts.
How it looks: Purging typically occurs in areas where you already have clogged pores or acne and resolves in a few days.
2. Reaction to Products
Allergic reaction: Some ingredients might not agree with your skin, causing redness, irritation, or bumps. IF it's a an allergic reaction, you can usually take a antihistamine such as Benadryl after your facial to help your reaction.
Overuse of active ingredients: Strong exfoliants such as acids, or retinol used during a facial might irritate sensitive skin, leading to breakouts.
3. Improper Technique
Aggressive extractions or unsanitized tools can irritate the skin or introduce bacteria, potentially causing breakouts.
4. Post-Facial Care
Touching your face: Touching or picking at your skin after a facial can transfer bacteria and lead to blemishes.
Not following aftercare advice: Skipping sunscreen or using the wrong products post-facial can also affect results.
How to Minimize Breakouts After a Facial:
Communicate with your esthetician: Share your skin history, allergies, and sensitivities.
Choose the right type of facial: Some facials are more intense than others. Your esthetician can recommend one suited to your skin type.
Follow aftercare guidelines: Avoid heavy makeup, excessive sun exposure, or harsh skincare products for at least 48 hours.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins.
